In case you missed it - new multi-purpose facility made the news again:
Yukon Government announces the new facility in the Legislative Assembly:
https://www.whitehorsestar.com/News/major-gymnastics-climbing-facility-announced
Thursday April 21st, in the Legislative Assembly, the Yukon Government announced it will proceed with the new Polarettes Gymnastics Club and Climb Yukon facility in Whistle Bend. “Yukoners are some of the most active people in the country, and rock-climbing has exploded in popularity in our territory and across Canada,” said Community Services Minister Richard Mostyn in his announcement, “Climbing is now an Olympic sport and a sport option in the Canada Winter Games.”
Minister Mostyn spoke about our association's contributions to the sport of indoor climbing in the Yukon, saying, “Climb Yukon Association has coached a youth climbing team in the Yukon for more than 26 years, and since 2008, they have worked as a not-for-profit and now a sport.”
The new facility will provide more programming and regular public access to a modern indoor climbing facility, noted the Minister.
Climb Yukon is incredibly excited about what this facility will bring to the community. Indoor climbing truly has skyrocketed over the past decade, as more people experience the mental and physical resilience that the sport brings. None of this would be possible without both the Government of Canada and Yukon Government. Climb Yukon is very grateful for the opportunity to work together on this. Having a dedicated climbing facility brings important health and wellness benefits to many different groups, while also providing opportunities at a competitive level.
Innovative and creative work is underway to design the facility, with participation from industry experts and Yukon Government's Infrastructure and Development Branch along with Climb Yukon, Polarettes Gymnastics Club and Yukon Gymnastics Association, ensuring that the specifications of the facility meet the competition standards for events such as the Canada Winter Games.
Just over a year ago, Climb Yukon received status as the Territorial Sport Organization for the Yukon, under Climbing Escalade Canada, opening doors to local athletes and possibilities for the Yukon as a competition destination.
The new multi-purpose facility will be located in Whistlebend, and is slated to be ready spring 2024. The energy efficient building will be set up to separately house both Climb Yukon and Polarettes Gymnastics Club, who have long outgrown their facility at Vanier Catholic Highschool.
Our association and team is now busy focusing on community engagement, exploring future partnerships, and developing the operational and business plan that will guide and prepare our association for when the facility opens. Stay tuned for a public survey, community events and other engagement opportunities over the coming year.

We are excited to announce that with the support of the Northern Roots grant we will be able to run free youth drop-in bouldering. This funding is crucial in helping grow the sport of climbing and help develop youth athletes as it allows them time to climb outside of practice. Furthermore, it is a great opportunity to introduce the sport to new participants. Youth Drop-in will take place on Friday's from 5:00pm to 9:00pm in two different time slots to adhere to public health protocols. We look forward to seeing everyone get on the wall!
